Yes, it has a plastic housing. About 95% of all my photos are shot outside. I've taken this on rigorous mountain hikes daily(in a camera bag), and it shoots great images. One reviewer said it needs "image stabalization." Huh? Obviously lighting conditions and camera settings can greatly effect camera shake, but I've not experience a single problem. I've even used it in some high speed photography (frozen water drops)with amazing results.
This lens goes down to f/1.8 and for the price, you'll have a hard time finding a lens this crisp and light sensitive until you get into hundreds if not thousands of dollars. When most lenses will peter out from lack of available light, there's still plenty of aperture left on this. Images are very crisp.
The cleaning kit was a nice extra too.
