(More customer reviews)A lens hood is a wise purchase no matter the lens you use. It serves two purposes. The first, is that it prevents flare from stray light from coming into the lens, whether it be sunlight on a bright day, or the errant bit of light from a lamp while indoors. Even in controlled studio setups, a hood helps stop unwanted light reflections from causing random unexpected problems. Its a nice insurance measure to protect the beauty of your photographs.
The second use is one that causes it to pay for itself, and your lens, over time. It is a protection device, taking hits from your lens and deflecting them through its flexible plastic body, rather than letting shock pass through the delicate mechanics and glass of your valuable lenses. Dumps and dings can happen anywhere, and do even to the most careful of photographers, and you'll want all the protection you can get to make sure a random pedestrian bump or a slight trip over some rocks doesn't put your lens out of commission.
This is a Canon hood, meaning it's made to work with your Canon lenses. Third party hoods can be much, much cheaper, but they will not be as good as this Canon hood. For one, this hood's "flower petal" look ensures it is adjusted perfectly so it never causes vignetting in your photos, unlike cheap third party hoods.
Operation is simple, as the lenses this is compatible with have ridges that connect with this one. Just put it on your lens, give it a slight twirl, and its locked in place! Do it in revers to take it off, and even flip the thing around and lock it in place backwards when storing this lens. I've only had a few issues with the hood jamming in place, but that I attirbute to myself trying to put it on too fast in a hasty situation. This thing comes on and off in less than a second, but once its locked in place it'll take a big hit to knock it off.
If you just invested some money into one of the lenses this fits on, do yourself a favor and buy this hood. Do it to protect both your lens and your photographs.
